Department of Botany

         The Biology subject was started along with the establishment of the Namrup College in 1973 having a Pre-degree science course. The subject was taught by temporary or flying teachers until 1986. The degree course in Biochemistry core was started in 1987. In the meantime, the science stream of the college was brought under deficit grants in the aid system of the government of Assam in 1992. A major course in Botany has been running since 1993.

      Now, the Botany Department is one of the well-equipped departments in the college. Apart from the delivery of the academic curriculum, we are organizing various activities throughout the year. World Biodiversity  Day, International Wetland Day, Environment Day, No Tobacco Day, etc. are our key events organized in a year. During the academic session 2020-21, the Botany department added a skill-based course "Mushroom Cultivation". 

        Some of our ex-students are well-established in various fields. Some alumni students are working as Teachers at University, College, and School levels. Some are working in banks, government offices, Tea gardens, Companies, etc.

Other Departmental activities:

       We are providing free training for our students to enable them technical experts in mushroom cultivation, vermicompost preparation, and maintenance, nursery management techniques, and hydroponics cultivation. The department is also taking responsibility for organizing awareness programs throughout the year. Among these - are International Wetland Day, Biodiversity Day, No Tobacco Day, Plantation Drive, etc. to create awareness among the students and surrounding communities.

        The department has its forum in the name of the "Botanical Society" and performs different activities in the college. 

Teaching, Learning, and Evaluation

           The department is well-equipped with modern teaching aids and instruments. Theory classes are done through the LCD projector, model, chart, topic-wise field visit, etc. The Department has a high-resolution microscope, best autoclave, 20000 RPM ultra-centrifuge, etc.

          During the pandemic situation caused by COVID-19, departmental faculty were engaged in the preparation of self-learning materials, tutorial video, online classes, etc. for continuing the teaching and learning processes. For the benefit of students, some recorded tutorial class videos are uploaded on the college website under the button Online Classes.

            The Botany department has its departmental blog/website to share the different activities of the students http://botanydeptnc.blogspot.com. Through this blog, we are trying to develop the reading and writing skills of the students.

Research, Innovation and Extension

            The department has a good history in research and development. The department has already completed two major research projects and one minor research project. Departmental faculty members got sanctioned an Institutional Biotech Hub (IBT-Hub) sponsored by DBT, Govt. of India. Apart from these, departmental students are engaged in basic research in different fields of plant sciences.

Student Support and Progression

            Providing proper guidance and support is the prime objective for our students. Apart from delivering curriculum content on time, teachers always give their best effort in the overall development of our students. The department organizes mentoring classes, and remedial classes for slow learners, providing an additional chance to the students who cannot sit in sessional examination for valid reasons, career counseling and guidance, support in extra-curricular activities, etc. 

           The department is always trying to connect with our alumni students. We are seeking suggestions and assistance from alumni students for the improvement of teaching, learning, research, and development.

Governance, Leadership, and Management

          The botany department is one of the leading departments of the institution with its expertise in Plant Sciences. Faculty members of the department perform various duties assigned by the authority. Apart from this, the department has its own management policy for its staff and students. Various information related to meetings, notifications, examinations, seminars, etc. displayed in the departmental notice boards and disseminated through e-platforms like WhatsApp. 

         Departmental faculty members have regularly upgraded their professional skills by attending various Faculty Development Programme. Departmental faculty members assist the administration by conducting externally funded seminars, FDP, etc.

Institutional Values and Best Practices

            Every year the Department of Botany in collaboration with other departments or college forums organizes activities like Wetland Day, Biodiversity Day, No Tobacco Day, etc. The botany department maintains the college Botanical Garden.
